Graduation Photography
Celebrating an extraordinary accomplishment
The exams are complete and the end is almost here. You’ve worked really hard to reach this goal and now you want to shine! There is no better way to celebrate your completion of this milestone. College and High School graduations are an excellent time to schedule a photo session to commemorate this amazing achievement.
As a professional photographer located in East Lansing, MI, home to Michigan State Spartans, I’ve been a part of college graduations for over a decade. There isn’t anything more exciting than watching a group of graduates; bright green capes flowing, smiles bright, and caps on their heads, posing for photos to highlight this astounding accomplishment. I have also had opportunities to photograph young people finishing their time in high school and celebrating this achievement as well.
Why Graduation Portraits Matter
This is more than an end of school photo. It’s a celebration of growth, independence, and all the hard work that led to graduation day. While everyone has their own style and expectations for graduation portraits, one thing is universal: you’ll want to remember the moment you donned your cap and gown and prepared to walk the stage to receive your well-earned diploma or degree.
A Session Built Around the Graduate
Your graduation session should reflect your personality, interests, and passions. Whether you prefer hitting the local hot-spots, finding a hidden gem location, or something in between, I tailor each session to match your style and comfort level.
Personalized Planning and Consultation
Every graduation portrait session includes a complimentary consultation, where we’ll map out the entire experience:
· Location selection (urban, nature, school, sports field, etc.)
· Wardrobe and styling ideas
· Props or personal items (musical instruments, sports gear, pets, books, etc.)
· Inclusion of family or friends
This consultation ensures that your session runs smoothly and we capture every image that matters most to you and your family.
What to Expect
Once the planning is done, your session day is all about creating art and lasting memories. With over 30 years of experience photographing families and young adults, I bring patience, guidance, and creativity to every shoot.
I’ll make sure you feel confident and relaxed, helping your natural expressions shine through. We’ll capture a variety of looks—from timeless portraits to fun, personality-filled images you’ll love.

Tips & Hints for a Great Graduation Portrait Session
Make the Most of Your Moment
A successful graduation photo session is more than just showing up. It’s about preparing in a way that helps you feel confident, relaxed, and authentically you. Here are a few helpful tips to ensure your graduation session goes smoothly and results in photos you’ll love forever.
Choose the Right Location for You
It is quite common to head to campus the week of graduation and wait hours to pose at a treasured hot-spot. Given that these sessions are timed, if may work better to choose a location that has less traffic, go during lower turn-out times, or even select locations that aren’t as popular with all the other graduates.
If you absolutely have to have your photos taken at a specific set of locations, let’s work that into a session flow, understanding that there may be long lines, large crowds, or an inability to hit all the desired locations.
There are so many great locations around our area, we may be able to find a location that is more suitable and less crowded.
Come Prepared
Graduation sessions tend to involve a lot of walking, a lot of people, and specific props & poses. Being as prepared as you can to achieve all the images you’d like, will make the flow of these sessions stress-free and fun!
- If you plan to do a lot of walking, wear good walking shoes and bring the pretty shoes.
- Bring a mirror and hair brush or wear something to keep hair from flying away.
- If you plan to spray champagne, bring what you need for that (cork screw, towels, etc)
- Work out a walking plan with a Plan B option, just in case.
- Bring water and snacks to avoid dehydration and light-headedness.
- Bring a friend or family member if necessary to calm nerves, carry supplies, and help put a smile on your face.
With a little preparation, your graduation photo session can be one of the highlights of your year. If you need help choosing locations, outfits, or props, or just want to chat about your ideas, I’m happy to guide you every step of the way.
