About Ariniko

East Lansing Family & Event Photographer – Capturing the Heart of Mid-Michigan

Hi, I’m Ariniko (pronounced air-i-knee-ko), a professional photographer based in East Lansing, Michigan, specializing in family portraits, event photography, and community storytelling. I serve the Greater Lansing area—including Okemos, Haslett, Dewitt, and, of course, East Lansing—with heartfelt, on-location photography that celebrates your life’s most meaningful moments.

My journey into photography began unintentionally. Growing up, I never imagined becoming a professional photographer. I started taking photos simply to document the life and activities of my own family. Over time, friends and relatives began asking me to photograph their events—weddings, birthday parties, and more. What began as a hobby slowly evolved into a calling.

In 2010, I launched a personal project to walk and photograph every street in Lansing. That adventure—now the basis of my City Saunter Books—helped me discover my passion for visual storytelling and community engagement. Volunteering to photograph Lansing’s most iconic events helped build both my portfolio and my confidence, eventually inspiring me to pursue photography full time.

From 2013 to 2017, I ran a creative studio in REO Town, where I connected with Lansing’s vibrant artist community and continued growing my photography business. Today, I work primarily from home in East Lansing, photographing families, small businesses, and local events throughout the Capital Region.

As a mom of four and a grandmother to three, I have a natural way with children and families. My background in psychology helps me connect with people from all walks of life—whether it’s calming nerves during a portrait session or capturing the spontaneous joy of a family gathering.

Whether you're looking for professional family photography in East Lansing, high-quality portraits, or coverage for your next local event, I’d love to be part of telling your story. I bring a mix of warmth, patience, and creative energy to every session, and I’m proud to be a trusted photographer in the Greater Lansing community.

PERSONAL QUESTIONS

Where do you live?
I live in East Lansing, Michigan with my husband Patrick, our twins Evan and Ellie, and our sweet dog Cooper. We also have two grown sons, Michael and Andrew, who now live nearby with their own families. Being surrounded by family has deeply shaped the way I photograph others—with warmth, patience, and purpose.

Favorite vacation memory?
Growing up, our family took two-week camping trips to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, especially Lake Pomeroy. We explored the Porcupine Mountains, chased waterfalls, and soaked in the peace of northern Michigan. These early adventures sparked my appreciation for natural beauty, which you’ll often see reflected in my outdoor photo sessions.

Did you write a book?
Yes! I’m the author of two books in my City Saunter series, chronicling my project to walk and photograph every street in Lansing. You can find the books under the Press tab on this website. I also kept a blog during the three years of the project, capturing the stories and images that came from walking the heart of Michigan's capital city.

Favorite photography experience?
One of my most memorable shoots happened in 2013, when I was invited on a private tour of the Michigan State Capitol. I brought along my professional camera—while others just had phones—and was able to capture breathtaking photos from inside the dome, including rarely seen views from the steeple windows.

What would be your dream job (other than photography)?
Fun fact—during my behavioral psychology studies, I learned that my degree could qualify me to train dolphins. I’ve always thought that would be an incredible (and slightly magical) job!

BUSINESS QUESTIONS

What camera gear do you use?
I shoot with Canon equipment. When my husband and I got engaged, we were gifted a Canon EOS film camera by my future father-in-law. I’ve stayed with Canon ever since, growing with their gear into the digital age.

How long have you been a photographer?
I've been capturing life through a lens since 1992, started my photography business in 2001, and officially became an L.L.C. in 2015. I bring over 30 years of experience to every shoot.

What are your favorite East Lansing photo locations?
It depends on the family or session goals, but some of my favorite local spots include:

  • Old Town Lansing

  • Meridian Historical Village in Okemos

  • Francis Park

  • Turner-Dodge Mansion

These spots offer multiple unique backdrops—perfect for a variety of looks in one session without changing locations.

What’s your favorite season to shoot?
Fall is my absolute favorite! The colors are vibrant, the light is soft, and the golden hour glow is unbeatable. But honestly, every season in Michigan offers something unique—from snowy family cuddles in winter to playful beach shoots in summer.

What advice would you give a family before a photo session?
Make it fun! Choose a location your family already enjoys—like a park, downtown stroll, beach, or orchard—and turn your session into a memory. Bring bubbles, walk the dog, plan a picnic, or promise ice cream afterward. Natural joy always photographs best.

Why hire a professional photographer in East Lansing?
In today’s world, almost everyone has a camera—but professional photography goes far beyond the snapshot. It's about lighting, composition, connection, posing, post-processing, and storytelling. With over three decades of experience, I can anticipate the perfect moment and craft images that not only look beautiful—but feel meaningful.

Your images will hang in your home, be shared with loved ones, and tell your story for generations. Invest in that legacy by hiring someone who understands how to turn moments into lasting art.
